SAD-BJP Alliance Sweeps Chandigarh Municipal Polls 2016

The ruling SAD-BJP alliance in chandigarh has scored a landslide victory in the municipal elections of Punjab state . BJP national chief Amit Shah has hailed the win as vindication of the party's recent demonetisation policy. The win may also come as a big boost for the party ahead of crucial state assembly elections early in 2017. The SAD-BJP alliance has won 21 of the 26 seats while the Congress got just four seats. One seat has gone to an independent candidate.

Chandigarh MC Polls 2016 - Polling Summary

In Chandigarh MC polls across 26 wards in Chandigarh saw 57.19% turnout on Sunday. Highest voter turnouts 73.87% in Ward No. 27, 72.38% in ward No. 23 and 70.26% in Ward No. 11. The polling was peaceful," Tarseem Lal, an election office spokesman said here after conclusion of polls quoting initial estimates of polling percentage. The fate of 122 candidates was decided. The total number of voters is 5,07,627, including 2,37,374 female voters. Congress and BJP are contesting from all 26 wards, while BSP are contesting in 17 wards only. The results will be declared on December 20.

UT State Election Commissioner Rakesh Mehta announced poll schedule for the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections to be held on Dec 18 2016.There are 26 wards in Chandigarh in which the elections will be held. There are 26 wards in Chandigarh in which the elections will be held. There are 5,07,190 voters in the city, out of whom 2,70,358 are male and 2,36,819 are female and 13 of them are third gender. There are about 460 polling booths. Five wards which are to be reserved for SC candidates will be on the basis of maximum SC population as per the latest census of 2011. Two wards for SC women, of the five wards that are to be reserved for SCs, will also be decided through this draw of lots only.There are a total of 122 candidates in the fray, which is lower than the tally of 152 in the 2006 MC elections. The Congress are contesting from all 26 wards; the BJP is contesting from 22 wards, BSP 18 and SAD are contesting from 4 wards . Eight independents withdraw nomination papers on last day.

About Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh

The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh came into being in the Union Territory of Chandigarh under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, as extended to the Union Territory, Chandigarh by the Punjab Municipal Corporation Law (Extension to Chandigarh) Act, 1994 (Act No. 45 of 1994), with effect from 24th Day of May, 1994. As per sub-section (3) of Section 8 of the Act, the State Election Commission determined the wards for Scheduled Castes, for women under the proviso to sub-section (2) of Section 6 of the Act and in accordance with the manner prescribed by the Administrator, U.T., Chandigarh.
