Delhi Municipal Corporation Election 2017

As the tenure of the current Municipal Corporation in Delhi expires in April 2017, Elections in Delhi's three municipal bodies north, south and east corporations were held on 23rd April 2017. There are a total of 272 wards in the three municipal corporations in the city, including 104 each in South and North Delhi municipal corporations and 64 in the East Delhi Municipal Corporation was polled on Sunday. More than 1.3Cr people, including 1.1 lakh first-time voters were cast their vote. According to Delhi State Election Commissioner, SK Srivastava; 54% voter turnout recorded across Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Results of three Municipal Corporation was announced on 26th April. The BJP clean sweep in all municipal body with 181 seats and AAP was the second runner-up with 48 and congress stand with 30 seats. Other state political party SP and BSP won 3 and 1 seats.

Number of seats reserved for woman in North MCD is 42 while in South MCD is 45. East MCD has 27 seats reserved for women. The Yogendra Yadav-led Swaraj India, a new political party that formed in October 2016, plans to field MCD election 2017. Swaraj India Party contesting on 200 wards of Delh. Party has released its vision document on Sunday and promising "governance with zero-tolerance for corruption and a garbage-free and epidemic-free city." Election Commission allotted a common symbol 'Whistle' to Swaraj India party. But party did not open account.

The ruling BJP as well as opposition are trying to rope him in to give a boost to their campaign to dethrone the Delhi Municipal wards. BJP is contesting election on 267 seats, while 5 seats have been given to Akali Dal. In the last Delhi Municipal Corporation Election 2012, the BJP won 153 seats out of total 272 convincingly while the Congress emerged the runner-up with 77 seats. The BJP has decided to field none of its 153 sitting councillors and contest the polls with only fresh faces.

MCD Election - Delimitation of MCD Wards 2017

Delhi government notifies delimitation of 272 wards ahead of Delhi municipal polls in the national capital. As per the instruction, the Delhi municipal polls are required to be completed before April 27, 2017.

While the number of wards in each of the three corporations - 104 each in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) and North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and 64 in East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has remained same, the number of wards in a few assembly segments has changed, ranging from three to seven.

According to the notification issued by the Urban Development department following approval from Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, Matiala which falls under SDMC will have 7 wards, Madipur (4), Rajouri (4), Hari Nagar (3), Tilak Nagar (3), Janakpuri (4), Vikaspuri (6), Uttam Nagar (5), Dwarka (4), Najafgarh (5), Bijwasan (5), Palam (4), Jangpura (3), Kasturba Nagar (3), Malviya Nagar (3), RK Puram (3), Mehrauli (3), Chatarpur (4), Deoli (5), Ambdekar Nagar (3), Sangam Vihar (4) and Greater Kailash (3).
